Learn all about West Cumbria's amazing rivers with our FREE, hands-on educational sessions for KS2.

Wild River Days - We start in the classroom, using Ordnance Survey maps to identify your local rivers, streams and lakes. You'll find out how different land conditions affect rivers by carrying out a soil experiment, and learn about the amazing animals that live in and along rivers. This session develops critical thinking and problem solving skills. We'll also think of ways we can save water usage and learn some interesting facts about the new United Utilities pipeline.
We then head to your local river where you'll use fieldwork techniques to observe, measure and record river features and get into the river for some river dipping! With our one-day option we can bring the river creatures to you if you can't take part in a field trip.
One day session (half day in the classroom plus half day field trip or we'll bring the river to you!)
Two day session (full day in the classroom plus full day field trip)

Assemblies - A great way to introduce learners to rivers. These interactive 30 minute assemblies will cover your local river system, landscape features, geographical river terms and the creatures found in and along the river. We can also discuss the United Utilities new pipeline project and think of some clever ways to save water.

Mussels in the Classroom - Learn about the fascinating, critically endangered freshwater mussel which has its last stronghold in England in the rivers of Copeland. The session includes time spent in the classroom
with activities and completing a work booklet, followed by a trip to the river to see the freshwater mussel using bathyscopes (glass bottom viewing buckets) and underwater cameras.

We can also deliver sessions tailored for you and your class and can adapt them for KS1.
