• Enabling pupils to make the link between what they are learning and the world of work

From Cockroaches to Mines and Frogs to Paragliding

The children at St Bega’s C of E Primary learnt about how to dream BIG!

Last week volunteers from a range of local businesses brought careers and job titles to life when they visited St Bega’s C of E Primary School, Eskdale as part of their DREAM BIG Aspirations morning.

Celia MacKenzie, from the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, talked about how her career was built around her love of horses. She decided to go to University to study Zoology but ended up training to be an accountant.

Paul Fletcher, from Wood PLC, told the children about his career journey working in steel mills, power stations, mines to ending up working in the nuclear industry.

Carol Pugh, from Copeland Borough Council, used to work as a tutor but stated her new job at the Council a month ago. She showed the children pictures of her tandem paragliding jump and emphasised the importance of hobbies and how they teach you skills that are transferable to the world of work.

The strong message that the children got from the session was that working hard is the only way to achieve your goals. Something the children’s teacher very much appreciated, commenting to the speakers that the children were very engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the session. The children said: I liked everything about the workshop especially getting to hear from the volunteers explaining about their jobs and the job interviews helped me to think about the job I wanted to do.

Paul Fletcher Director at Wood PLC who is Governor at the school said: It was a fantastic activity. The children were very attentive, well behaved and really participated. I’d do another session! Carol Pugh from Copeland Borough Council also commented: This has been such a lovely session. It’s been fantastic listening to the children talking about their futures. It was an extremely good, well planned facilitated activity with all the children engaged.
